It began in 1852 as Porto's industrial school and has had its present name since 1974. It has more than 6,000 students on bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes and nine departments, covering civil, electrical, computer, mechanical, chemical and geotechnical engineering as well as physics, mathematics and management. Research is spread across about a dozen units. One of them, GECAD, applies artificial intelligence to engineering and computing systems and is strongest in intelligent energy systems, smart grids, energy efficiency and demand response.
